Is a Destination Wedding Right for You?
Thinking about getting married somewhere dreamy and far from home? In this video, I share the real talk on destination weddings—what works, what wobbles, and how to know if it’s truly the right fit for you (and your guests). Watch now, then scroll for the highlights!
Dreaming of white sand, turquoise waves, and maybe a few palm trees photobombing your vows? You're not alone.
Destination weddings are having a major moment—and for good reason. But before you pack your bags and say “I do” in paradise, let's have a little heart-to-heart. Because while it sounds magical (and it can be!), this kind of wedding isn't right for everyone.
In this live video replay, I break down the real pros, cons, and “hmmm, had I thought of that?” moments when it comes to destination weddings. Here's a peek at what we covered:
First, What Exactly is a Destination Wedding?
Spoiler: it doesn't have to be international.
If you and your guests are leaving home to celebrate your love somewhere new, even somewhere like Colorado ot the coast, it's a destination wedding.
But more often than not, couples are jetting off to warm-weather spots like the Caribbean or Mexico for picture-perfect backdrops and built-in vacation vibes.
Proposals Are Pppin' (And Planning Starts Fast!)
Most engagement proposals happen between Thanksgiving and Valentines' Day, so if you said yes (or expect to soon), you're in good company. And if a destination wedding is on your mind, the planning clock is officially ticking.
Let's Talk Money: Is It Really Cheaper?
It can be.
All-inclusive resorts (especially in the Caribbean) often offer wedding packages that bundle flowers, food, decor, and more. So yes, you'll likely get more bang for your buck… but remember, “all-inclusive” doesn't mean free. You'll still need to budget for travel, accommodations, your guests' experience, and any extras.
Your Wedding = Their Vacation?
If you're inviting guests, keep in mind: your wedding is probably going to be their big vacation for the year. That's a huge compliment—but also a huge responsibility. Think:
- Can they afford it?
- Can they get time off work?
- Do they even have passports?
And are you okay if someone you love can't make it?
You're Planning From Afar. Are you Okay with That?
Here's the truth:
You likely won't see your venue, flowers, food or decors until you arrive. That takes trust (and possibly a scouting trip). If you're someone who needs to be hands-on with every decision… a destination wedding may feel like a leap of faith.
It Takes Time (So Don't Wait!)
A solid destination wedding timeline? Around 12 months. Especially if you're bringing guests. Eloping or planning something intimate? You might get away with 6 months or less. But trying to rush the process? That's a one-way ticket to stress-ville.
Don't Forget Grandma (or Guests with Special Needs)
Not everyone can hop on a plane and switch time zones without a second thought. Think about who must be there and whether traveling will be realistic—or risky—for them. (One viewer even shared how they had to plan around their dialysis schedule. That's real life, friends.)
Why I'm (Happily) Biased Toward the Caribbean
Full disclosure: I specialize in Caribbean weddings for a reason.
Not only are the views drool-worthy, but I've built relationships with resort teams who get it right. My go-to? Sandals and Beaches Resorts—adult-only and family-friendly options that know how to do weddings, honeymoons, vow renewals, and elopements right.
